Thanksgiving Aftermath; Get Back On Track
Thanksgiving Aftermath – Ahhh….so we made it past Thanksgiving Day. Family, food, football and lots of fun. The day after is a time of reflection and choices right?
- – Do you continue indulging with the left-overs in the refrigerator or
- – Do you immediately get back to your normal routine and healthier version of meals?
The Friday after Thanksgiving can be a tough one for those trying not to overindulge a second day in a row. First off, don’t go crazy and think fasting or cutting back dramatically can make up for overeating on Thanksgiving. If you don’t get enough calories you will find yourself hungry and end up overeating later in the day. Instead, look back on Thanksgiving Day for what it was; being with family and friends and enjoying good food and for some, wine or other alcohol. Then shake it off and get back into your routine and follow some of the guidelines below:
- Don’t skip your breakfast(s) thinking that will save you calories. Although you won’t consume the calories you also slow down your metabolism – which you don’t want to do.
- If you’re craving leftovers a turkey sandwich can be on the menu just create a healthier version. Perhaps cut out the mayo and skip the dressing. But white meat turkey is an excellent lean protein so enjoy.
- Just remember as you transition back to your normal routine that the key is to make good choices and control portion sizes.
- If your refrigerator includes left over vegetables, choose the veggies that are high in fiber and will keep you full. Examples; carrots, brussels sprouts, green beans, and broccoli.
- If you are still craving that pumpkin pie or mashed potatoes, this is where good choices come into play – serve yourself a smaller portion.
- Don’t forget that staying hydrated the day after Thanksgiving (or any event where a little over-indulgence occurred) is very important.
Hopefully your normal routine includes exercise. If not, consider adding this to your daily routine now and start forming it into a habit.
It doesn’t really matter what you do the day(s) after the holidays, just get up and move. Whether it is a walk around the neighborhood, a bike ride or a trip to the gym, you will notice a difference physically and mentally. Exercise is great food for your brain!
